Varicose VeinsVaricose veins are enlarged blood vessels close to the surface of the skin most commonly found on the legs and feet. Unlike spider veins, varicose veins are much more noticeable, can cause aching and discomfort and can even lead to more serious medical problems such as phlebitis (inflammation of the veins), skin ulcers, and blood clots. Luckily, varicose veins respond well to treatment. Dr. Ignatowicz has experienced great success for many years treating varicose veins using sclerotherapy and surgical stripping, but the newest and best treatment is with the use of the EVLT (EndoVenous) ultrasound-guided laser system which has a higher success rate with fewer side effects and is covered by most insurances.
Sclerotherapy is a safe, proven and effective procedure where a solution is injected into the vein to close it, forcing the body to reroute the blood supply via another vein. The results are often immediate, though sometimes it takes several days to weeks for them to fade. Severe varicose veins can be surgically treated via ligation or "stripping." An incision is made and the vein is removed. This procedure is done in the hospital. Smaller "spider veins" respond well to both sclerotherapy and laser treatment. How will vein treatment benefit me?Patients are very pleased with the results of vein removal which give their legs a smoother, younger and healthier appearance. More importantly, they can ease pain, swelling and eliminate medical risk associated with this condition. What are the risks of sclerotherapy?Dr. Ignatowicz is highly experienced in this relatively easy and safe procedure. Complications are rare but include inflammation, scarring, allergic reactions and blood clots. As with every procedure, Dr. Ignatowicz will perform a thorough examination and monitor progress to ensure the best results. The targeted veins are permanently treated, but if you are predisposed, new varicose veins will appear in the future and need additional treatments.
